Inner Beauty Friday - Book Club!

Hello!

It's Friday and time for Book Club - so I'm linking up again with Heather from Blonde...Undercover Blonde

This week I read "The Distant Hours" by Kate Morton
 The Distant Hours

She also wrote "The Forgotten Garden" & "The House at Riverton".  I think "The Forgotten Garden" was my favorite of the three I've read.

Here's the synopsis from Goodreads.com - "
A long lost letter arrives in the post and Edie Burchill finds herself on a journey to Milderhurst Castle, a great but moldering old house, where the Blythe spinsters live and where her mother was billeted 50 years before as a 13 year old child during WWII. The elder Blythe sisters are twins and have spent most of their lives looking after the third and youngest sister, Juniper, who hasn’t been the same since her fiance jilted her in 1941.

Inside the decaying castle, Edie begins to unravel her mother’s past. But there are other secrets hidden in the stones of Milderhurst, and Edie is about to learn more than she expected. The truth of what happened in ‘the distant hours’ of the past has been waiting a long time for someone to find it."

My thoughts: I liked this book for what it is - a good easy read.  I like her books because there's always a secret, a castle/manor house and likeable characters.  This one had lots of interesting characters and my one main complaint is that you "heard" the story from everyone and their mother's point of view, so it got a bit drawn out.  But all in all I like books that give you a bit of real history alongside the fictional tale.

  1. I like historical fiction, and castles are just plain awesome. Sounds like a good one for a light change of pace.

    1. It was a good change of pace - I usually lean towards books with hardship! Like now I'm on American Slavery and being motherless. I don't really read for "escapism" I want to learn something, or think about things in a new way.

  2. I've heard so many great things about Kate Morton. And while I think she an author I'd really enjoy, I've yet to pick up anything by her. Soon hopefully though, I'll make it happen!

    1. I have to say for what I consider "light" reading I have always been impressed, she lets her main character be a woman who isn't all caught up with getting a man so that's nice too.
